(29,83 square km with 2554 inhabitants: Vitorchianesi)
It is a small mediaeval hamlet particularly well kept and with characteristic internal roads. It is located at 285 metres above sea-level on a peperino
cliff, delimited by big gorges that converge to the near stream Acqua fredda. The underlying valley is particularly charming: it has a marked primordial
aspect, due to the volcanic erosions of the volcano Cimino, that took place six millions of years ago. The town, conquered in ancient times by Viterbo,
rose up, asked Rome for help and submitted to it. The demonstrations of attachment to Rome were so evident that the village was named faithful and
had a series of privileges, among which that of sending a constable and nine Liegemen to watch over the Capital. The tradition has existed for 700 years
and during official displays there are always the Liegemen of Vitorchiano.
PLACES TO VISIT
Town hall
It was built in 1300 and then modified during the Renaissance. The windows that look on Roma square have a square-topped shape. Inside it is possible to admire the big Council-Room,
where there is a semicircular Arengario decorated with the coats of arms of Vitorchiano and Rome.
Town hall tower
It is the highest of the towers of Vitorchiano (about 30 metres). Thanks to its solidity and imposingness, it was the last defence of the village against the invadersattacks.
Church of St. Maria Assunta
It was built in the XIII century and it is the oldest and most monumental church in the village. It is of evident
Romanesque style with a close bell tower in gothic style with three orders. Inside there are a baptismal font, some remains of frescos and a sixteenth
century hanging pulpit, very well kept.
St. Michaels Church
It is a fourteenth century oratory, situated near the village, in a panoramic position, along
one of the deep gorges surrounding the ancient hamlet and it is dedicated to the Patron of the village.
