The village is situated at 26 km from Viterbo at 265 metres above sea-level, between the Monte Cimino and the Tiber, at the extreme borders of the
Monti Cimini. Vasanello has Etruscan origins, later it was ruled by the Romans and in 727 became part of the property of St. Peter. T
he territory was ruled by numerous families, among which the Orsini, the Tomacelli and the Migliorati. The Colonna family ruled it till 1700
and later it was ruled by other families related to the Colonna, like the Barberini and the Sciarra.
PLACES TO VISIT
Castle Orsini
It has a quadrangular shape with cylindrical towers at the extremities. It was built in 1500 on a pre-existent edifice. Now it houses a permanent exhibition of artistic ceramics.
Church of St. Maria delle Grazie
On its inside there are some interesting frescos by Pastura; the faade is decorated with a 15th century fresco.
The Church of St. Salvatore
It was built in the 13th century, it is of evident Romanesque-Lombard style. Near the structure there is a bell tower with six orders.
The church of St. Maria Assunta
The cathedral was erected in the 11th century on the remains of an ancient Roman temple. It was built close to the walls and the bell tower was made out of one of the towers. In front of the faade it is possible to admire an original asymmetrical peperino portal , under which there are numerous finds.
