(208,03 square km with 7669 inhabitants: Tarquiniesi)

It is situated at about 40 km from Viterbo and it is on a rocky rise facing the sea. Like most Etruscan town, Tarquinia is situated between two rivers: The Mignone and the Marta. The first proof of the existence of Tarquinia dates back to the 9th century B.C. , as it is testified by many remains of Villanovian necropolises and traces of a village of huts in the locality Monte Calvario,. Thanks to the favourable position, near the sea and overlooking the valley of the Marta, a navigable river up to the Middle Ages, Tarquinia could control the internal territory and the maritime traffic. In the 4th century B.C. Tarquinia fought against Rome, later it became a confederate town and municipium in 70 B.C.

PLACES TO VISIT

Palace Vitelleschi and the national museum

The ancient palace, built by order of Vitelleschi in the 15th century, has Gothic and Renaissance shapes. The faade is subdivided into three parts even if well linked one to another.. On the left we can admire a big Renaissance portal with the effigy of the cardinalÕs coat of arms, surmounted by a big mullioned window with two lights and by an open architraved gallery which rests on some columns.

The Etruscan necropolis

The Etruscan necropolis is situated at about 4 km from the town and is 5 km long and 1 km wide. Inside there are 600 tombs dating back to a period which goes from the 6th to the 2nd century B.C. On the walls of the funeral rooms it is possible to admire an exceptional ensemble of lively and coloured paintings.

Church of St. Maria in Castello

The building in Romanesque style dates back to 1121 and probably the church was built on an older edifice. The faade simple and at the same time austere, is surmounted by a small bell-gable and has three portals with round-headed arches, lunettes and architraves.
