S.Lorenzo Nuovo, small town m.503 above sea-level, is situated in a panoramic position at the crossing of the speed-ways Cassia and Maremmana, on the northern versant of Bolsena's lake, 43 km Nw from the chief town Viterbo. It's an interesting urbanistic model of '700. The eitheenthcentury village, modern urbanistic planning's example, rises from the necessity to transfer the old village which lay in a lower, unhealthy and constantly exposed to sirocco position. The supporter of this idea was the pontiff Clemente XIV who committed the architect Francesco Navone to carry out the plan; he tested a research aimed to build an ideal city. The building, thanks to the cardinal Braschi (the Pio VI to-be), ended in 1778 and the next year the 356 inhabitants remained in the old village, managed to enter the new habitations. The history of its ancestor in Val di Lago, take us back to 770 after Christ, when the inhabitants of the near etruscan city Tiro moved here to find a safer place. Around 1100 it was given to the church from Matilde di Canossa, submitted to Orvieto untill 1359, it came then definitively back under the Holy see. The buildings'uniformity characterizes S.Lorenzo Nuovo, except the church of San Lorenzo which dominates the octagonal place from its 34 m.of height. Inside the church are kept painting by Vasari, a wooden crucifix of XII century (coming from the old village) and a PIO VI's bust assigned to Canova. The interesting geographical position in which it lies, it's an ideal base to turistic and cultural excursions in a numerous as well as famous localities ofUmbria, Toscana, Lazio, for example: Orvieto, Parco Naturale di Monte Rufeno, Monte Amiata, basso senese, maremma with Pitigliano, Sorano e Terme di Saturnia, Argentario, Mare Tirreno, Tuscia e Viterbese, in addition to enjoy the wonderful area of Bolsena's lake.
