The origins of this singular hamlet, nowadays almost completely uninhabited, date back to the Etruscan age, when in this area there was an
urban settlement called Maternum, situated in the locality de Motino. The place was in a good strategic position as it was connected by the via
Clodia to Tuscania, which was very important at that time. Till the Middle Ages, Tuscania was a reference point for Piansano, as during the fights
between the local powerful families and the Church, it often sided with Piansano. Soon the events were coming to a head and the powerful town started
to take revenge on its protge: in 1301 it sent its military troops to conquer the village and as it did not manage to conquer it, it asked the Senate for a
decision and the Senate entrusted Piansano to Tuscania. Later it was ruled by the De Vico that were thrown out in 1354 by cardinal Albornoz, charged
to restore the power of the Church in the lands of the Papal State. For a short period it belonged to the Montemarta, to whom it was entrusted by Pope
Gregory XI and in 1381 it was the turn of the Farnese. Among ups and downs the Farnese held the reins of Piansano till the institution of the Dukedom
of Castro, which took place three years after the election as pope of Alessandro Farnese, Paolo III. With the destruction of the Dukedom of Castro and the
consequent fall of the Farnese, Piansano sank into oblivion and remained in this situation until the 20th century, when thanks to the vitality of its inhabitants,
it managed to find its own dimension.
