It is immersed in the greenery and situated in a position from which it is possible to sight Mount Amiata, Mount Rufeno, the river Paglia and Tuscan lands.
According to the legend Proceno was founded by Porsenna and since ancient times it had always to settle up with invaders: the crossing of Via Cassia,
favoured not only cultural exchanges, but also the arrogant behaviour of the best. So the population soon began building a big work of wall fortification,
that in any case was not enough to keep in check the expansionist trends of Federico Barbarossa. During the following years, Proceno had to submit to the
hegemony of Orvieto; later it was ruled by several seigniories, among which the most important that of the Sforza.
