It is located on a hilly area, at 341 metres above sea-level, at about 45 km from Viterbo. The first historical documents concerning the village,
date back to 1038, but probably it has older origins . Until the 8th century the whole territory was dominated by the Ildebrandini family and
later it was ruled by the Farnese until 1658, when they were replaced by the Chigi family. At the beginning of 1800 Farnese was annexed to
the properties of the Church and finally it was ceded to the princes of Torlonia.
PLACES TO VISIT
The church of SS. Salvatore
It dates back to the 16th century and on its inside it is possible to admire some works like a Messa solenne di Paolo III which can be attributed
to Paolo Maria Panico.
The castle or fortress
It is the ancient residence of the Dukes Farnese, It was built by Antonio Sangallo the Younger and the
big portal is probably a work by Vignola.
The church of St. Rocco
On its inside there is a wonderful 16th century canvas by Lanfranco, which portrays St. Antonio da Padova.
