The hamlet has Etruscan origins, like most of the villages of the surrounding territory, the first settlements, in fact , date back just to the Etruscan period.
Canino took on historic and strategic importance with the Farnese. In fact Alessandro Farnese, who was born in Canino in 1468 and became pope with
the name of Paul III, made numerous donations to his
son Pierluigi. The latter included Canino, together with other villages that already belonged to him, in the Dukedom of Castro.
PLACES TO VISIT
Vulci, the Etruscan necropolis and the Civita
Vulci, one of the most interesting and suggestive Etruscan expressions, is at the border with the territory of
Montalto di Castro. It is a notably big area, where it is possible to admire the ruins of the great and powerful Etruscan town destroyed by The Romans in 280 B.C.
The Castle of the Abbadia and the national museum and The abbey of St. Mamilian ,destroyed by the invasions of the Saracens and rebuilt by the Cistercian monks in the 12th century,
stands lonely near a bridge built during the Roman age on Etruscan foundations.
The oasis of Vulci
The oasis wanted by the WWF, extends along the river Fiora, where a water fall has originated a small lake, where it is possible to bathe. In the area that boasts a surface of 158 hectares, the
paludous habitat has favoured the proliferation of many animal and vegetal species.
