(10,75 square km with 1771 inhabitants: Monterosesi)
Thanks to its strategic position, in the past it had an important role and was often contended. The Via Cassia encouraged economic and cultural exchanges
with the rest of Etruria and thanks to this, Monterosi and other neighbouring villages grew from the economic and cultural point of view.
The territory was sacked and besieged by the Romans, the Goths and the Longobards. Monterosi is mentioned in history books because it was theatre
of memorable events. For example, in 1155 it was chosen by Pope Adriano IV as the place to meet Federico Barbarossa who had to be crowned emperor :
on that occasion Federico Barbarossa refused to hold the stirrup to the Pope who had to mount a horse.
PLACES TO VISIT
Lake of Monterosi
It is located not much far from the village and occupies an occasional crater of the Monti Sabatini; the historical meeting between Federico
Barbarossa and Pope Adriano IV took place on its shores.
The small church of St. Joseph
It dates back to the beginning of 1400 and it has remarkable historical and cultural importance.
The Via Francigena
Monterosi is located along the trial-course of the ancient Via Francigena; it is possible to reach its lay-out following the suitable signs.
