(189,67 square km with 7063 inhabitants: Montaltesi)

Montalto is located at about 50 km from Viterbo, on a tufaceous spur, on the left bank of the Fiora, not much far from the Tyrrhenian coast. Agriculture and summer tourist business are its main resources , but also cultural tourist business has recently begun to develop the great potentialities offered by the territory. Thanks to its geographical position, it has always had a prosperous economy. In the Middle Ages it was the harbour of Tuscania, as proof of that, there are the tower and the small fortress , which rise both near the area. In the past it belonged to the Church and in 1421 with a bull, Pope Martino V included it in the properties of the Apostolic Camera and decided to offer several incentives to those people who decided to live there. From 1537 to 1649 it was part of the Dukedom of Castro, feud founded by Pope Paul III Farnese for his son Pierluigi.

PLACES TO VISIT

The castle of the fortress

It was built in 1400 by the Orsini and restored in 1535 by Pierluigi Farnese, when the Pope got control over it. During the centuries the edifice has been restored several times and has lost little by little its original characteristics.

The church of Santa Croce

It was built in the 14th century. It was restored for the first time in 1636 and during the centuries it underwent other restorations. The present entrance is opposite to the original one with a round-headed portal and water foil capitals, today bricked up.

The church of St. Maria Assunta

It was probably built in 1400, with only one nave with barrel vault, it has four side chapels with paintings dating back to the 18th century and 19th century.
