It is a wonderful hamlet at a few km from the capital and at only 32 km from Viterbo. It is located on a tufaceous rise between two volcanic mounts,
Cimino and Sabatino and its territory is mainly hilly. Some archaeological finds testify that the first human settlements in this area date back to
the prehistory : fragments of worked stones, of arrows and small fragments of fired clay crockery have been found there. The hamlet of Etruscan
origin was the scene of fights between the Romans and the Etruscans because of its particularly strategic position.
PLACES TO VISIT
The cathedral
It is a Romanesque style building, erected on a temple of rather ancient origin and later modified in the 18th century. The bell tower dates back to 1200. It is interesting to see the pavement of the nave.
The Etruscan necropolis
It is the most evident proof of the past Etruscan settlements. There are rupestral tombs dug out in the tuff, set on more rows, some decorated with care
and subdivided by valuable pillars.
The church of the Madonna del Parto
It was built digging out in the tuff. At the beginning it was an Etruscan tomb and later it was transformed by the Romans into a temple dedicated to the god Mithras and later transformed into a Christian church.
The amphitheatre
Its origin is not yet certain, perhaps it was Etruscan or perhaps it was Roman. Surely it was built by Etruscan men according to an Etruscan technique of building. In the past it could contain up to 3000 people.
