(24,63 square km with 1278 inhabitants: Onanesi)

It is located, like the other small villages of the area, on a tufaceous rise, very near to the boundary with Tuscany. In the Middle Ages it had ups and downs,
due to the fight between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines and to the quarrels between the local lords and the Papal State. It was ruled by the Monaldeschi and
later by the Sforza that dominated the area for a long period and made numerous improvements to the village.

PLACES TO VISIT

The church of Santa Croce

It is a modern building, erected in 1956 following a design by the engineer Lupino. On its inside there are works of art which can be attributed to Ruffini and to Claudio Ferri.

The church of St. Maria della Concezione

It was built in 1784 and it has a great importance for the inhabitants of Onano, as it houses the urns of the two Patrons, St. Trifone and St. Colombo.

The church of the Madonna delle Grazie

It is a wonderful church in Romanesque style , revised and enriched in the 14th century. It is worth visiting it, mainly for its beautiful Sienese school frescos.

Palace Madama

Situated in the centre of the village, this majestic and imposing fortress was built in the half of 1300. The manor-house was irremediably destroyed by the Lanzichenecchi (German mercenary soldiers) in 1527, on their coming back from the Sack of Rome,
but promptly rebuilt by Corrado della Cervara.
