Montalto is located at about 50 km from Viterbo, on a tufaceous spur, on the left bank of the Fiora, not much far from the Tyrrhenian coast.
Agriculture and summer tourist business are its main resources , but also cultural tourist business has recently begun to develop the great potentialities
offered by the territory. Thanks to its geographical position, it has always had a prosperous economy. In the Middle Ages it was the harbour of
Tuscania, as proof of that, there are the tower and the small fortress , which rise both near the area. In the past it belonged to the Church and in
1421 with a bull, Pope Martino V included it in the properties of the Apostolic Camera and decided to offer several incentives to
those people who decided to live there. From 1537 to 1649 it was part of the Dukedom of Castro, feud founded by Pope Paul III Farnese for his son Pierluigi.
