It is located on a slight high ground which meets the valley of the Tiber. The undulatory territory is particularly rich in vegetation and copse.
Its origins date back to the 13th century. Graffignano was ruled by the Baglioni from Perugia and in this period it was subdued by Orvieto.
Later it was ceded to the Santacroce who ruled it until the present days and with whom Graffignano knew the highest splendour.
After the fall of the Papal State, Graffignano and its territory were annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
PLACES TO VISIT
The castle
The castle was built by the Baglioni in the 14th century by order of the Papal State. The fortress is built on the side of an imposing cylindrical tower
erected on a rectangular tower, which because of its considerable height , was probably the donjon of the fortress. Its structure was probably modified
as with a round tower, there were a large field of vision and of fire and a remarkable resistance to the big firing artillery.
Nowadays, this tower has no more the original height as it is shown by the holes in the wall which contained the beams that held the last floor.
