(39,89 square km with 1463 inhabitants: Bomarzesi)
It is a small mediaeval hamlet, particularly well kept, located at about 18 km from the capital of province, at the extreme north of the
Monti Cimini. It is located on a tuff rock overlooking the whole valley of the Tiber. Some archaeological finds testify that Bomarzo
was inhabited since the prehistoric age, while during the Etruscan period it was probably the important centre of Meonia, as many
tombs found in the surrounding territory testify. It was dominated by the Romans and in the Middles Ages was a bishops seat, so
under the Churchs control. In 742 Liutprando, king of the Longobards, gave the territory to the Papacy. From the XIV century it was
ruled by the Orsini family until 1645, when the Lante family entered into possession of it.
PLACES TO VISIT
The cathedral
The cathedral, in evident Renaissance style , was rebuilt in the XVI century and later restored. Near there is a characteristic bell tower erected on
the remains of an Etruscan buildind. Inside it is possible to admire some Florentine school frescos dating back to the XVI century.
Palace Orsini
It was erected in the XVI century on the remains of a pre-existent mediaeval castle. Inside it is possible to admire some frescos of excellent manufacture,
can be attributed to the Zuccari and to the Viterbese Bonifazi.
The monsters park
The park was built by order of Vicino Orsini, valiant commander in the Papal stateĆs service, at the end of the XVI century, when he laid
down his arms and decided to lead a more tranquil and peaceful life. It is located in the valley at the foot of the hamlet and houses many fanciful and
grotesque sculptures, together with a small temple of octagonal shape built by order of Vicino in memory of his wife.
