Description:
From the inside of the Basilica you can access the cave of St Cristina, composed of a large hall with the chapel of the body of Christ. Here is guarded the altar, a valuable artefact of the eighth century on which, according to tradition, was the Eucharistic miracle. The ceramic blade, which depicts the double scene of the Calvary and the Miracle is a work of Benedetto Buglioni (1459/60-1521) and was executed in 1496. On the arc of the entrance to the basilichetta is a fresco, maybe attributable to the 13th century. The basilichetta is the result of a primitive medieval extension, memory ‘ad corpus’ to the tomb of the martyr Cristina. Opposite the apse is a beautiful fifteenthe century statue, also the work of Buglioni (XV century) depicting the saint in the sleep of death. The frescoes of the vault are sixteenth century, whilst those of the apse depicting St Peter are of the fifteenth century. Finally, underneath you access the tomb of the martyr, a simple coffin of the fourth century, brought to light thanks to the excavations made in 1880.
