(37,16 square km with 1439 inhabitants: Celleresi)

The ancient hamlet of Cellere, located in the heart Latian Maremma , clutches at a tufaceous spur, surrounded by lands and hills, in an enchanting scenery, bly marked by the furrows of the ditches that border it. The village, cut in half by the main road, as it was the custom in the past, offers a singular panoramic view of the valley of Tiber. The origin of the name is singular as well: it derives from ÒCaerereÓ, the goddess of harvest, to point out the places wealth. According to other interpretations, it has even older origins and it is supposed to be a legacy of the Etruscan period: it is supposed to derive from celle, that is to say stores. In fact , it seems that during that period the place was used as Vulcis granary. Even today CellereÕs economy is mostly based on agriculture: the main cultivation is that of olive-trees, rewarded by the EEC with the trade-mark D.O.C. (Controlled denomination of origin) Canino, for the excellent quality of the oil which comes from these olive-trees.

PLACES TO VISIT

The Church of St. Egidio

It is the most important monument in the village and it boasts noble origins: it was built by Antonio Sangallo the Younger and it is a small jewel of Renaissance architecture. Erected between 1512 and 1520, in the middle of a small valley, it boasts harmonious, flowing and elegant lines. The perfectly kept inside, with a wonderful, hexagonal pavement is enriched by numerous 16th century frescos, of excellent workmanship and of great historic and artistic importance.
