(63,94 square km with 2321 inhabitants: Castiglionesi)

The nice hamlet at about 38 km from Viterbo, is situated at 228 metres above sea-level and overlooks the whole valley of the Tiber. Probably it was named Castiglione after a big bhold located in its territory and later in Teverina was added to distinguish it from other homonymous villages. Castiglione in Teverina is mentioned in historical documents only in 1351, as before it was part of the territory of Orvieto and was never taken into consideration. It became an autonomous urban, administrative and political entity just as a consequence of the fights inside the noble family of the Monaldeschi from Orvieto. The Monaldeschi ,who were of the Guelph party, got rid of the Filippeschi who were of the Ghibelline party and began ferocious internal fights for the control of the town.

PLACES TO VISIT

The collegiate church of St. Philip and St. James

The building was finished in 1630 and it overlooks the main square of the village. On its inside it is possible to admire a valuable tablet which portrays the Virgin with the Infant Jesus, between St. Dominic and ST. Catherine, dating back to the 16th century, together with The Annunciation Day and The Last Supper, typical 17th century works.

Fortress Monaldeschi

The edifice dates back to the 12th century and was built with materials coming from Paterno, a neighbouring town, destroyed by the Monaldeschi. In the past it had a function of sighting and defence, now it has taken on the aspect of a tranquil bell tower.

Parco Valle dei Laghi

It occupies a surface of 140 hectares; on its inside it is possible to observe animals from all over the world. In the middle of a luxuriant vegetation, lakes and brooks, there is also a local fauna, living freely.

The rural church of St. Maria della Neve

It was built at the beginning of 1500 by order of Alessandro VI ; it is very characteristic and its inside is particularly suggestive.
