(20,96 square km with 3098 inhabitants: Canepinesi)
The origin of the name Canepina seems to be linked to the old processing of hemp, that in the past was a source of wealth for the inhabitants of the village.
Some historical documents testify with certainty that the name Canepina appeared for the first time in 1093. The village has Etruscan origins and as
proof of this there are many finds .The mediaeval hamlet belonged, as many other villages of the Etruria, to the powerful family of the Prefects Di Vico
that built there a castle in the year 1000. Later it came into the Churchs possession and Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) gave it as a present to his son
Pier Luigi.
PLACES TO VISIT
The Castle of the Anguillara
The castle was built by order of the Anguillara family around the 14th century.
The Church of our Lady of Mount Carmel
The inside of this church is richly decorated with stucchi, paintings and frescos dating back to the 15th century.
The Church of our Lady of the Assumption
It has an original Renaissance faade and an elegant bell tower. Inside there are a silver-gilt goblet and a chain, embossed and chiselled.
On the goblet there are some engravings representing the ecce homo, the crucifix and several saints.
