It is situated on the Volsini mountains'slopes 350 m. above sea-level and it comes down sweetly to the flat land, on the nord eastern lake's coast, it's 31km north far from Viterbo. From the old original city, the etruscan Velina, it preserves walls of the IV century B.C. and a small temple. From the following roman city called Volsinii, built by the survivors from Velzna, after the old city's destruction (264 B.C.) remains the following: the amphitethre, the thermae, bridges, ways and necropolis. In the ancient village, very well preserved, is situated the Collegiata church with its romanic style of Santa Cristina; it was built in XI century on old christian catacombs. Furthermore we can find a chapel built in 1693 on the memoirs of the Eucharistical Miracle of 1263. The castle (XIII-XIV century) dominates the village from the top, it's been recently restored and welcomes the intereting territorial museum of the lake. Bolsena, a coastal small town that gave the name to the homonymous lake, is situated in a place that always, because of its amenity, encouraged the human settlement. Its ancestor town was quite certainly the etruscan Velzna or Volsinii in latin language, the powerful town, according to the researchers' reports, was situated on the hill, in the same place where nowadays Orvieto lies and it was following fully destroyed by romans in 264 B.C. The survivors, forced from the conquerors to move to the environs, where at present Bolsena is, founded the town again calling it with the same name Volsinii. After some decades, the roman town supported by the position on the lake and from the opening of the Cassia road, gained notoriety and it became a town council until and for the whole first period of Christianity having still the catacombs of Santa Cristina (the martyr, to whom the Collegiata church is dedicated) that are partly unexplored and the biggest and most important of Lazio. The town had then a falling off, due to the destructions suffered by Longobardi in the middle of V century and by following various contenders before becoming definitively church's patrimony till the accession of the Italian Kingdom in 1861. Bolsena had another reason to be famous with the transit of wanderings who went from north towards Roma through the Francigena road, that from Siena identifies with the Cassia road, previously runned along from Longobardi. Bolsena has nowadays the typical look of a small medieval village. In wintertime little more than 4.000 persons reside there and the quiet is hardly broken by the traffic of the Cassia road and by visitors with religious or studious intent. From the springtime, the buses with students' tours animate the lake-front and the buses with tourists invades Santa Cristina place to visit the catacombs and the Eucharistical Miracle altar. In sommertime there are the holiday-makers, welcomed in campings, rent houses and hotels so that the beaches and the fresh avenues with trees are very crowded. The lake is full of various boats: motor-row-sail-boats; the fishermen wait patiently their quarries; the bathers are on the port's rocks and on the beaches all the time with a nice breeze. The small lively town is nice and quiet. On the sea is possible to practise every kind of aquatic-sport: boat-racing, water-ski, swimming, fishing and because of the variable, seldom very b wind: wind-surfing and sailing; the only demanded endowment to keep a real pleasure in practising the above mentioned sports is the prudence and the respect. The oaks-chestnut trees-hornbeams-woods on the hills around Bolsena allow the holiday-makers to make many excursions and here a park, realized by the municipal corporation, offers a place for picnics and free camping. The remains of ancient settlements and of the etruscan necropolis, are the fascination for archaelogists, students and tourists. The numerous restaurants serves typical latium dishes with fish of the lake and agreeable wines; the most appreciated wines are the red ones: Aleatico and Cannaiola and the white one: Est!Est!Est! Concerning the night amusement, there are plenty of beer-houses and discos where to have fun. Furthermore, the excursions to the neighbouring villages of Tucsia are very interesting either for touristic or cultural purpose. As you can read, in Bolsena it's possibile to have a pleasant and diverting stay.
