(37,34 square km with 897 inhabitants: Barbaranesi)

It is a beautiful mediaeval hamlet, located on a cliff of volcanic origin, surrounded by rocky walls and rich vegetation. In ancient times, it was called Marturano but in was renamed Barbarano by Desiderius, king of the Longobards. The large necropolises united under the name of San Giuliano, show, like an open book about Etruscan architecture, the main typologies: from the tombs a pozzettoÓ to the tombs a fossaÓ, to the tumuluses, from the imposing die tombs, characteristic of rupestral necropolises to the tombs with portico, unique in the Etruscan world. The village became also a bishopÕs see, as we know about some bishops just called Marturanenses. The modern name of Barbarano appeared for the fist time in the documents in the year 1188, when Pope Celestino III gave the village as a present to Viterbo.

PLACES TO VISIT

Marturanum suburban park

The park is rich in peculiarities that make many tourists particularly fond of this destination. There are numerous natural and archaeological resources. The pittoresque rupestral necropolis of San Giuliano, situated inside the park, is a proof of the archaeological importance of the place. One of the main characteristics of the park is the variability of the climate, due to the different height of the territory: from the oceanic climate with 900 metres above sea-level to the mediterranean climate with 600 metres above sea-level.

The necropolis of San Giuliano

The site is located at about 2 km from the village, and it is possible to visit tombs of different shapes, belonging to different periods. There are finds which go from the 6th to the 5th century B.C.

Museum

Inside the church of St. Angelo, there are numerous finds dating back to several periods, from the Villanovian culture to the 3rd century B.C.
