It was built on the remains of the ancient Etruscan settlement of Contenebra, destroyed by the Romans during the conquest of the Tuscia : the inhabitants who survived, founded two new settlements: Arlena and Civitella of Arlena. During the Middles Ages, the population founded the present village of Arlena. The ruins of the castle are a proof of that period and are one of the few historical remains of the village.
PLACES TO VISIT
Etruscan painted tomb
In the locality called La Piantata, near the road leading to Piansano, it is possible to see a deep excavation, work of unknown persons: this is the entrance of an Etruscan tomb with hypogean room, painted decoration and onomastic inscription.
The necropolis
In the localiy called Arenella, on the western side of the road leading to Canino, there are many tombs a fossa. They were dug out in the tuff and originally covered with tiles.
